Heather Gillingham-Harris started her specialty insurance career in 1995 at Gillingham & Associates, working in a dual capacity as an underwriting assistant and retail producer for outdoor related business throughout the United States. She took that experience to Insurance Management Associates (IMA) in 1998, where she built one of the largest portfolios of retail outdoor business in the U.S., before taking a brief pause from the business to raise her two children. Heather returned to the industry to start Outdoor Insurance Group (OIG), where she continued her tradition of client advocacy and customer service to the outdoor and lodge industry. In 2009, Heather sold her agency to re-focus on her family and raising her children. Once her children were older, her love and enjoyment for outdoor recreation led her back to form Specialty Insurance Agency, which focuses on a “hands-on” approach to service and the creation of new outdoor insurance programs. Heather and her husband Brian are extremely grateful to run a business in an industry they both truly love.
Heather’s exposure to both the underwriting and sales side of the industry provides a unique perspective that she puts to work for her clients every day. Understanding how insurance companies evaluate and rate risk allows her to deliver the most comprehensive and competitive options to her clients, and gives her an advantage when negotiating with company underwriters.
Heather’s roots to insurance go back three generations, as her grandfather was one of the founders of Colonial Penn. Her father, Tom Gillingham, was the founder of Gillingham & Associates, and the pioneer for providing insurance for the outdoor recreation, lodging, and hospitality industries. Her father grew the company into the largest insurer of outdoor recreation in the country. Her family has not only provided her with a sound understanding of providing property and casualty insurance, but they also passed along a love for the outdoors which helps her connect with and understand the needs of her clients.
Heather is a devoted wife, mother of two children and an avid outdoor enthusiast. She has trolled the waters of the Atlantic, Pacific and Gulf of Mexico, fly fished the streams, rivers and lakes rivers of the Rocky Mountains, New Zealand and Argentina. Heather has hunted upland birds, waterfowl and big game throughout North America and is routinely found hiking, camping, skiing and exploring with her family outside of their homes in Kansas and Colorado. Her love of the outdoors helps strengthen her relationships with her insurance audience.
Before joining his wife at Specialty Insurance Consultants, Brian worked in the commercial real estate industry where he was a Mortgage Banker and most recently as an FHA and Fannie Mae Production Manager. In his roles, he was a provider of capital solutions for his clients that developed, owned and/or operated multifamily and healthcare properties. Throughout the course of his successful career in commercial real estate, Brian was responsible closing over $1 billion in transactions for his clients. Brian left his job in commercial real estate to join forces with his wife— his goal was to spend more time with his family while being closer to outdoor recreation.
Brian’s roots reach back to his early days growing up in Ohio where his father would take the family fishing to Lake Erie and Canada where they would catch walleye, northern pike, muskie and perch. Brian’s older brother attended Penn State University and this is where Brian fell in love with mountain biking and fly fishing. Brian later attended Clemson University in South Carolina. While in South Carolina, Brian spent much of his free time fly fishing the upstate area and also fell in love with low country fishing around the Charleston area.
Later Brian moved to Denver, Colorado where he spent 20 years enjoying all that the state offers. Brian was often found fly fishing, hiking, biking (mountain and road), snowshoeing, hunting, camping and skiing. Brian and Heather met in 2010 and got married in 2012 and have spent a large majority of their free time enjoying all the outdoors has to offer.
Mollie is a 10-year-old Golden Retriever who can usually be found at the feet of Heather or Brian at the Specialty Insurance Consultants headquarters. She loves to swim, dive underwater for rocks, hike, scare fish away and have her belly rubbed at every possible opportunity. Don’t let that sleeping face trick you, Mollie is ready at the drop of a hat to head out on the next adventure!
